Directory of Black Muslim

Mental Health Professionals

"Salaam! Can you please help me find a Black Muslim male therapist? My wife and I are looking for couples therapy and it's been really hard finding a therapist we would feel comfortable talking to."

"Salaam! Does Black Muslim Psychology have a list of Black Muslim therapists?

On March 11, 2020, the Coronavirus was declared a global pandemic. Since that time, many countries around the world have had to quickly figure out how to manage the fast spreading disease. Unfortunately, it has hit the Black/African American community in the United States at alarming rates. The reality that many Black Muslims are facing at this time include financial loss, grief, trauma, health and medical concerns, and other vulnerabilities. Some of these concerns existed before the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and for some of us it has triggered feelings of anxiety, depression and despair.

Many are seeking help and support, but are unsure of how and where to find a therapist who shares their faith and racial identity. This is where YOU come in!

Muslim Wellness Foundation, Inc. (MWF) and Black Muslim Psychology Conference (BMPC) are developing a comprehensive national directory of Black Muslim mental health professionals. This database will serve as a much needed resource for the entire community - for those seeking qualified and competent counseling services as well as Muslim mental health professionals looking to network with others around the country.

MUSLIM WELLNESS FOUNDATION (MWF)

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing stigma associated with mental illness, addiction and trauma in the American Muslim community through dialogue, education and training. In order to achieve this goal, we have adopted an interdisciplinary, spiritually grounded, community based public health approach to wellness. This approach emphasizes the importance of addressing sociocultural stressors (poverty, oppression, anti-Black racism) that lead to diminished well being. Racial oppression and religious discrimination are also forms of violence, which inevitably lead to trauma and stress. Therefore, we advocate that health is not simply the absence of illness, but draws upon a holistic understanding of an individual’s environment and leverages community, faith and identity in the attainment of an optimal quality of life.

BLACK MUSLIM PSYCHOLOGY CONFERENCE (BMPC)

Established in June 2015, on the 150th anniversary of Juneteenth, the oldest celebration marking the emancipation of descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States. This gathering intentionally and unapologetically centers the narratives, voice, and strengths of Black Muslims with a special emphasis on trauma and collective well-being. The convening seeks to understand and enhance protective factors, mitigate systemic stressors and promote psychological well-being within the Black Muslim community. Above all else, we focus on lifting up how Black Muslims recognize and celebrate the beauty, strength and joy this community possesses as well. The ways in which Black Muslims choose to love, laugh, dance, create, live and believe in a higher power and purpose.
